Moving And Handling Back Care Projects

The service is provided and managed by Action for Carers (Surrey) and employs Back Care Support Trainers to give information, support and training to Carers on all aspects of moving and handling. The aim is to support Carers to reduce the risk and likelihood of incurring muscle strain and/or back injury by providing back care information support and training which may help reduce these risks. If you consider you would like more information on any aspect of moving and handling please contact us (contact details below) and we will be happy to contact you. Professional/Voluntary organisations can also refer to us on our behalf should you prefer.

We are vulnerable at any age to the risk of injury from moving and handling. If you are caring with moving and handling involved, the possibility of injury may be increased by the effort provided, the repetitive nature of the handling, the techniques used and aspects of your own health and knowledge on moving and handling.

What could happen to you:

Physical

  • Soft tissue damage possibly due to hand hold positions i.e. bruising
  • Joint/ligament strain/injury
  • Back injury

The effect:

  • Increased tiredness
  • Pain, discomfort (acute/chronic)
  • Reduction or Loss of mobility
  • Increased level of sickness and absence from work
  • Reduced ability to care
  • Reduced income
  • Change in lifestyle, inability to pursue interests

What we can offer:

  • Back care information including postural care
  • Assist with Problem solving in relation to the  moving and handling issues
  • In some cases loan small handling equipment for trial
  • Provide training with moving and handling techniques and use of equipment
  • Continue to provide support at a pace which enables you to feel confident with the techniques and use of equipment
  • We can liaise with any additional support organisations e.g.  NHS Acute/Community teams, Social Care Teams or Voluntary agencies with your consent
  • Assess your moving and handling issues
