The term "Carer" refers to someone who looks after or provides regular unpaid help to family members, neighbours or friends who are sick or disabled, and who would be unable to manage without help.
This includes parent carers of disabled children and people caring for someone who is drug or alcohol dependant.
Children and young people (under 18) who undertake caring responsibilities or who are affected by a caring situation are known as Young Carers and have their own support organisation in Surrey,
Surrey Young Carers Project.
