Taking A Break

All of us need a break from time to time. This is especially the case if you are caring for someone a few hours a day or full time. You may need to attend an appointment or wish to pursue an interest or hobby. You may need to take a break for a few hours, a few day or a week or so. This need for a break may be on a occasional basis or a more regular break may be needed. Surrey County Council have introduced Carer Break Vouchers which is a simple and flexible way to provide some short term breaks. The Voucher scheme has been designed to offer carers flexibility in the timing of a break and a choice in how alternative care can be provided while you take a break from your caring role. There is also Direct Payments to carers which provide a further option in how you take a break. Our "Take A Break Directory" has a variety of information contained within it such as information about residential and nursing care, holidays, carers groups and much more!

Crossroads and similar projects

Crossroads gives practical help to carers looking after relatives or friends in their own homes by providing a flexible relief care service for the carers. Its aims are:

  • to relieve stress on carers and their families
  • to avoid admission to hospital or residential care of the person being cared for at home
  • to strive to maintain a high standard of care.

Crossroads is run by a voluntary committee consisting of representatives from Health, Social Services and Voluntary Organisations together with carers and disabled people.
